THE HISTORY – Villa Loggio

Clay, majolica (Italian pottery), ancient nobility. In the 18th century, Villa Loggio was owned by the Venuti Marquisate of Cortona: it was their country estate, surrounded by the same clay-rich soils that still surround it today. In the hands of Accursio Venuti these soils, known as “mattaione”, became a precious raw material for the porcelain factory that Accursio had opened in Catrosse, not far from Villa Loggio.

“Endowed with a fortune, and possessing knowledge of natural history and chemistry, full of singular energy and a true love for his country, he quickly created, established, and almost perfected… a majolica factory…”, wrote the lawyer Gregorio Fierli in 1805, describing Accursio.

The factory became such an important landmark of that period that an old document, also signed by the lawyer Fierli, lists some 60,000 items produced annually: fruit bowls, sauce coasters, sugar bowls, and finely decorated, high-quality soup tureens,

renowned for a refinement perhaps unique to those times, intended to adorn the tables of the nobility of the era, including the Popes.

“The aforementioned items will still be available in plain printed designs, or with a blue border, and painted in various styles. There will still be soup tureens of all sizes, round and oval in shape, as well as Imperial soup tureens for 18 or 20 people, oval in shape… and any other type, which, not being in stock, can be made to order‘, specified lawyer Fierli in his document, adding a note on the price: ’as regards prices, it is quite certain that they are more reasonable than in any other workshop, as evidenced by the constant demand for such items”.

Villa Loggio is now a charming and elegant resort that offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves immediately in the unique character that makes Tuscany so distinctive: a long avenue of cypress trees at the

entrance, followed by vineyards and hills that surround and embrace the estate.

The main Villa, the Annexe (the Dependance) and the Garden Villa offer a unique setting for guests staying there: all around are olive trees, ancient pines, vineyards and farmhouses, stretching as far as the hilltowns of Cortona and Montepulciano, two of the most visited in the entire region.
